The days after a chemical peel are where results are made or lost. Knowing what is normal helps you stay calm and look after your skin properly.
During and Right After the Peel
Most people feel tingling, warmth or a mild stinging sensation as the peel is applied, and it is neutralised or removed after a set time. Right afterwards, skin may look pink or lightly flushed and feel tight.
Your doctor will apply a soothing product and sunscreen before you leave.
Days 1 to 3
Skin can feel dry and tight, and may look slightly darker or tanned as the treated layer prepares to shed. This is normal. Use only the gentle cleanser and moisturiser recommended by your clinic.
Avoid hot water, steam rooms, strenuous exercise and anything that irritates the skin.
Days 3 to 7
Flaking or fine peeling often begins around day two to four and may last several days, depending on peel depth. Let the skin shed naturally. Picking or pulling flakes can cause marks and scarring.
Gentle moisturising and strict sun protection are your priorities.
What to Avoid
Skip scrubs, exfoliating acids, retinoids and any products your doctor has not approved until the skin has healed. Avoid waxing, threading and bleaching on treated areas, and stay out of direct sun as much as possible.
Always wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen and reapply during the day.
When to Contact Your Clinic
Persistent burning, significant swelling, blistering, oozing, unusual pain or signs of infection such as spreading redness or pus need prompt medical attention. Likewise, if you are unsure whether what you see is normal, it is always fine to call.
A good clinic expects follow-up questions and welcomes them.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will I peel visibly after every peel?
Not always. Lighter peels may cause only fine flaking or none at all, while stronger peels cause more obvious shedding.
When can I wear makeup again?
Your doctor will advise based on peel depth. Often it is after the initial redness has settled, using gentle, non-irritating products.
